About the position

The Bridge Design Engineer position at the State of Indiana involves developing, producing, and reviewing plans, specifications, and estimates for various bridge projects in compliance with State and Federal regulations. The role requires managing design projects of varying sizes and scopes, contributing to the improvement of Indiana's infrastructure, and ensuring adherence to engineering standards and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, produce, and review plans, specifications, and estimates for bridge projects.
  • Manage design projects varying in size, scope, schedule, and cost.
  • Serve as a resource for proposal development and research processes.
  • Coordinate programs and plans for the division/department, interpreting laws and guidelines.
  • Assist in the development of programs and technology plans to improve product quality.
  • Organize and conduct engineering investigations and field observations.
  • Assist in analyzing engineering data and developing technical guidelines and documents.
  • Participate in Quality Control / Quality Assurance programs to ensure compliance with design criteria.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (civil engineering preferred) from an ABET accredited school.
  • Registered Professional Engineer license in Indiana required, or working towards it with EIT/FE certification.
  • At least four years of experience in engineering, preferably in civil engineering or transportation research.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Extensive knowledge of civil engineering theories, principles, methods, and procedures.
  • Broad knowledge of planning, design, or construction of transportation project features.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and procedures governing engineering.
  • Ability to prepare and review complex design plans and reports.
  • Extensive knowledge of AASHTO Design Specifications and ASTM Standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with bridge design software such as CONSPAN, RC-Pier, GEOMATH, and Merlin Dash.
  • Completion of National Highway Institute courses related to bridge inspection and safety.
