About the position

The Bridge Inspection Group Engineer (Civil Engineer V) is responsible for overseeing and directing the inspections and comprehensive reporting of major bridges maintained by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). This role ensures compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and IDOT policies, while also managing inspection teams and addressing structural deficiencies to maintain public safety.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and supervise engineering and technician inspection teams in the annual and/or bi-annual detailed inspections of major bridge structures throughout the state.
  • Ensure adherence to the NBIS and/or IDOT bridge inspection policy and ensure the safety of the traveling public.
  • Develop comprehensive bridge inspection reports for major river bridges, providing necessary information for load capacity re-evaluation and repair needs.
  • Detect potential structural deficiencies during inspections and make recommendations based on observations and expertise.
  • Oversee the statewide underwater bridge inspection diving contract.
  • Participate in state line bridge inspections with neighboring states.
  • Assist in the development of bridge inspection policy and updates to relevant manuals.
  • Propose new methods for maintenance and repair of existing bridges.
  • Keep abreast of NBIS and technological developments related to bridge inspection.
  • Train, evaluate, and motivate staff to ensure a competent team.
  • Perform duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.

Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Five years of experience in civil engineering.
  • Certified as a NBIS Program Manager in the state of Illinois or must obtain certification within 12 months of hire date.

Nice-to-haves

  • Structural engineering experience.
  • Supervisory experience and ability to train and motivate personnel.
  • Ability to manage engineering functions.
  • Current registration as an Illinois Structural Engineer.
  • Extensive knowledge of civil engineering principles, especially in NBIS and IDOT bridge inspection policy.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at extreme heights.
  • Experience using Bentley Microstation and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access).
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
