About the position

Ulteig Engineers, Inc. is seeking a qualified Bridge Inspection Team Leader to join our bridge team. This role involves performing and supervising National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) Routine, Rope Access, or Underwater bridge inspections for our clients. The selected candidate will be responsible for inspecting highway structures and contributing to the design of small to large multi-discipline projects. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead bridge and structural design work and perform bridge load ratings. The role will require a balance of fieldwork and office tasks, making it essential for candidates to be self-motivated, possess excellent communication skills, and thrive in a collaborative team environment with a strong attention to detail. As a Bridge Inspection Team Leader, you will apply up-to-date standard bridge inspection techniques to complete various inspections, provide practical rehabilitation recommendations based on observed conditions, and conduct load ratings based on gathered field data and as-built plans. You will plan and lead multi-day bridge inspection trips, evaluating a variety of structure types, including bridges and ancillary highway structures. The role also involves performing inspections using Non-Destructive Testing and visual inspection methods with specialized access equipment. You will work closely with supervisors, provide guidance to assistant team leaders, and prepare or quality check inspection reports according to client specifications. Collaboration with business and engineering staff across multiple offices and technical disciplines is crucial, as is coordinating with clients and owners to determine schedules and access. This position requires travel up to 50% of each month, reflecting the dynamic nature of the work and the need to engage with various projects associated with multiple State Departments of Transportation (DOTs).

Responsibilities

  • Perform and supervise NBIS Routine, Rope Access, or Underwater bridge inspections.
  • Provide practical rehabilitation recommendations based on observed conditions.
  • Conduct load ratings based on gathered field data and as-built plans.
  • Plan and lead multi-day bridge inspection trips evaluating various structure types.
  • Perform inspections using Non-Destructive Testing and visual inspection methods with specialized access equipment.
  • Work closely with supervisors and provide guidance to assistant team leaders.
  • Prepare or quality check inspection reports according to client specifications.
  • Coordinate with clients and owners to determine schedules and access for inspections.
  • Collaborate with business and engineering staff across multiple offices and technical disciplines.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program or equivalent preferred.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) licensure or the ability to obtain one in 6 months is preferred.
  • Civil Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or the ability to obtain one in 6 months is preferred.
  • Minimum 5+ years of bridge inspection experience.
  • ADCI Entry Level Tender/Diver, Air Diver, or Air-Diving Supervisor certification is preferred.
  • SPRAT certification is preferred.
  • Successful completion of NHI training course #130055 'Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges' or #130056 'Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges for Professional Engineers' is required.
  • Successful completion of NHI training course #130078 'Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges' is preferred.
  • Successful completion of NHI training course #130091 'Underwater Bridge Inspection' is preferred.
  • Ability to lead and manage others in the field with minimal oversight.
  • Experience using Non-Destructive Testing methods is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of bridge inspection methods and procedures.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, planning, and mentoring skills.
  • Experience in bridge and structural design is preferred.
  • Experience in bridge load ratings and AASHTOWare Bridge rating BrR is preferred.
  • Must have authorization to work permanently in the U.S.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Pass pre-employment substance abuse screening and background check.
