About the position

The Bridge Intern position at the St. Joseph Engineering Project Office involves assisting in the structural design and analysis of transportation-related structures, such as bridges and retaining walls. The role is designed for students pursuing a relevant degree and offers hands-on experience under moderate supervision, contributing to the maintenance and development of Missouri's highway system.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural design computations and analysis for routine bridges, retaining walls, and box culverts.
  • Conduct structural evaluations for special permit or construction loadings.
  • Update engineering manuals and maintain the engineering library.
  • Create sketches using hand-drawing or computer-aided design applications to illustrate structure designs.
  • Rate bridges for load capacities and maintain the federal bridge inventory as required by state statutes and national standards.
  • Attend project meetings and consult with various stakeholders including department personnel and private consultants.
  • Evaluate and utilize engineering software and develop comprehensive spreadsheets.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in a relevant bachelor's or post-bachelor's degree program, preferably ABET-accredited for engineering candidates.
  • Must maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher out of 4.0.
  • Must have completed at least 30 credit hours.
