About the position

The role of a Bridge Leader / Structural Engineer at Stantec involves leading engineering teams on large-scale projects that enhance transportation infrastructure. This position is crucial for preparing designs and ensuring the successful development and delivery of structural projects, including bridges, highway interchanges, roadway reconstructions, subway stations, railroad infrastructure, and public spaces. The Bridge Leader will manage through subordinate supervisors to coordinate work activities and assignments within the department, taking responsibility for results, including costs, methods, and staffing. This role requires providing guidance on the direction of work, making decisions on staff selection, training, evaluation, and disciplinary actions. Additionally, the Bridge Leader will oversee the integration of subcontractors and employees, support business development, and contribute to proposal delivery. When necessary, they will also plan, design, and direct structural engineering projects, ensuring that resources and schedules align with specified completion dates and technical applications. In this position, the Bridge Leader will manage multi-discipline projects, maintaining client relationships and attracting new clients within the New York City Metro region. They will be responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating both routine and complex assignments, modifying established guidelines, and initiating new approaches. The role requires making independent decisions on work methods and procedures within the transportation practice and structural specialization. The Bridge Leader will also provide input into transportation practice improvement initiatives, staying updated on regulatory changes and establishing working relationships with regulatory officials. They will exercise initiative in adapting procedures to address unusual problem situations and resolve conflicts, providing technical assistance in complex problem-solving and decision-making. The Bridge Leader will review and seal projects, support regional bridge leadership, and work closely with structural engineering leadership to grow the bridge practice in the New York region. They will lead major project pursuits and provide oversight for multiple bridge squads in project delivery. Financial management is also a key responsibility, as the Bridge Leader will be involved in invoicing, managing, and monitoring project budgets. They may write and negotiate proposals as project issues arise, liaising with clients, agencies, and others to determine project requirements and approvals. This position demands sound judgment and initiative in interpreting policies and executing projects, along with the ability to perform other duties of a similar nature as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Structural Engineering or related field.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer; advanced degrees preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in structural engineering or related field.
  • Expert level knowledge of directives, programs, standards, and administrative procedures.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and relevant bridge/structural design software.
  • Broad technical knowledge within transportation practice and structural engineering sciences.
  • Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness.
  • Expert level understanding of codes, legal, and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions.
  • Ability to lead and collaborate in project team settings and communicate effectively.
