About the position

The Bridge Location and Layout Designer is responsible for the preliminary design and final layouts of various highway structures, including new bridges, culverts, and retaining walls. This role involves conducting hydraulic analysis, cost estimating, and ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines. The designer will work under general supervision and perform independent analyses to determine the most practical design solutions for highway structures.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent hydraulic and hydrologic analysis for stream crossing structures.
  • Design geometric layouts for grade separation structures in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).
  • Evaluate multiple design alternatives and prepare comparative cost estimates.
  • Prepare bridge memorandums for new and rehabilitated structures detailing necessary aspects and requirements.
  • Liaise with department personnel, state and federal agencies, and contractors to provide technical assistance and obtain necessary permits.
  • Coordinate and review work with division and district personnel to gather data for design.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university.
  • Successful completion of the Engineer-in-Training exam.
  • Five years of experience in civil engineering with proficiency in structural or hydraulic design.
  • An advanced degree in civil engineering may substitute for a maximum of two years of experience.
