About the position

WSP is currently seeking a Bridge Structural Engineer to join our Capital District offices located in Baltimore, MD; Washington, DC; and Herndon, Richmond, and Virginia Beach, VA. This role is integral to our Transportation Team, where you will be involved in various projects that aim to meet our clients' objectives and solve their engineering challenges. As a Bridge Structural Engineer, you will perform professional engineering work that encompasses the development and drafting of plans and details using CAD software for project design documents. You will also conduct field inspections and condition assessments of bridges, sign structures, culverts, and retaining walls, ensuring that all structures meet safety and functionality standards. Your responsibilities will include preparing quantity and cost estimates, structural analysis, and design calculations. You will review drawings to ensure compliance with design intent and specifications, assist more experienced engineers with broader engineering activities, and prepare technical studies, reports, and design document packages. Additionally, you will participate in incorporating advanced modeling techniques and design requirements to ensure the safety and functionality of transportation systems. You will verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance to secure structural soundness against environmental or human influences. Documentation is a key part of this role, and you will be expected to generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and 2D/3D illustrations. Compliance with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures is essential, as is the ability to exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources. You will also be required to complete training on assigned tasks and perform additional responsibilities as needed based on business requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional bridge/structural engineering work including development and drafting of plans and details using CAD software for project design documents.
  • Conduct field inspection and condition assessment of bridges, sign structures, culverts, and retaining walls.
  • Prepare quantity and cost estimates for projects.
  • Prepare structural analysis and design calculations.
  • Review drawings to assure compliance with design intent and specifications.
  • Assist more experienced engineers with broader engineering activities.
  • Prepare technical studies, reports, and design document packages.
  • Participate in incorporating advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation.
  • Verify the characteristics of a site, providing technical assistance on securing structural soundness from loads and pressures caused by environmental or human influence.
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and 2D/3D illustrations.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures including location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural or civil design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Knowledge of engineering analysis, design, and practices, including rehabilitation and new design.
  • Knowledge of process and concepts for design/build.
  • Knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, LEAP Bridge, LARSA, STAAD Pro, AASHTOWare BrR).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering License.
  • Master's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering.
  • Relevant engineering experience through internships, working knowledge/experience, and/or educational projects or studies.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
