About the position

The Technical Operations Manager at NewsNation is responsible for overseeing the daily broadcast and technical operations within control rooms and studios for national newscasts. This role involves managing quality standards, collaborating with various teams, and ensuring the technical needs of the control room staff are met. The position requires a strong leader with extensive experience in television operations, particularly in a newsroom environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day broadcast and technical operations for NewsNation.
  • Create and implement quality standards for control room and studio staff.
  • Liaise with field crews to ensure smooth operations.
  • Oversee technical aspects of production from remote signal acquisition to transmission.
  • Serve as a liaison between NewsNation Operations, Engineering, and News Production groups.
  • Ensure technical needs of Chicago control room staff are met.
  • Collaborate with Nexstar & NewsNation operations and engineering teams to verify technical requirements.
  • Maintain functionality and professional appearance of control room automation and equipment.
  • Work with news production & guest booking personnel for live shot transmissions.
  • Monitor live shot activity related to show assignments.
  • Help create and implement standard operating procedures.
  • Evaluate new technologies and make recommendations for budgeting and planning.
  • Support bureau photographers and reporters.
  • Administer annual performance reviews with staff.
  • Perform other operational duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 10-15 years of proven leadership in managing television operations teams and studios, preferably in a newsroom setting.
  • Extensive knowledge of Ross control room automation, cameras, non-linear editing systems, ENG video playback and ingest systems, and news acquisition equipment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Highly organized and self-motivated individual capable of interfacing with diverse groups and resolving broadcast technical issues.
  • Strong communication skills to convey technical fixes clearly and succinctly.
  • Experience working with and managing union employees in a collective bargaining environment.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications or related field preferred.
