About the position

The Broadcast Technologist at KFOR-TV is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, installing, and performing preventative maintenance on broadcast equipment. This role supports the day-to-day operations of the station and provides direct technical support for the news department, which produces over 50 hours of live programming weekly.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain TV transmitters, microwave equipment, audio consoles, video switchers, satellite transmitters/receivers, audio/video monitors, and associated equipment.
  • Maintain signal quality and proper levels throughout the studio and transmitter equipment according to established engineering practices, station policy, and FCC regulations.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair electronic newsgathering equipment as required.
  • Install, maintain, and repair microwave and satellite equipment on station vehicles.
  • Install and maintain cellular bonding equipment used by field crews.
  • Install and troubleshoot wide area networks, servers and routers, local area networks, and switches.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and equipment upgrades.
  • Maintain maintenance records and assist in station documentation.
  • Provide technical support to users within the station and in the field.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to combine logic, electronic theory, and knowledge of equipment operation to troubleshoot and repair analog/digital electronics, computers, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment (multi-meter, spectrum analyzer, etc.).
  • Mechanical ability to disassemble, troubleshoot, install, customize, and repair electronic equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and operating systems such as Windows, Mac, Linux, and 8-bit NES.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize tasks while remaining flexible to meet daily demands.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotation and ability to lift at least 50 pounds, climb ladders, grasp objects, and work in a physically active setting.
  • Availability to work various hours/days, including evening, overnight, and early morning shifts, with occasional weekends and holidays during emergency repairs.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation.

Nice-to-haves

  • FCC Licensed Amateur Radio Operator or SBE certifications preferred but not required.
