About the position

The City of Durham's Department of Water Management (DWM) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Water Treatment Plant Operations Coordinator (Plant Operator III) to join our team. This full-time position is crucial for ensuring the efficient operation and maintenance of the Brown Water Treatment Plant, with potential responsibilities at the Williams Water Treatment Plant as needed. The successful candidate will work the night shift from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, and will be responsible for overseeing the treatment processes that provide clean and safe drinking water to over 309,000 residents in Durham. This role requires a proactive approach to managing vital water resources, protecting the environment, and delivering excellent customer service. As a Water Treatment Plant Operations Coordinator, you will be tasked with coordinating and operating treatment plant equipment, monitoring chemical feeds, and making necessary process adjustments to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. You will also be responsible for training staff, performing laboratory analyses, and troubleshooting complex operational issues. The position demands a high level of independence, as you will often work without direct supervision, requiring you to be readily available by phone and capable of working rotational stand-by or recall duty. In addition to operational responsibilities, you will participate in reviewing operational policies, preparing reports, and maintaining accurate records and databases. Your role will also involve performing preventative maintenance on equipment, conducting inspections, and ensuring that all operations comply with applicable regulations and safety standards. Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and operates, maintains, and adjusts treatment plant equipment.
  • Prioritizes and assigns work; trains employees.
  • Monitors chemical feeds and makes process adjustments.
  • Collects samples and performs laboratory analysis.
  • Calibrates chemical meters and troubleshoots complex plant operation issues.
  • Ensures that plant operations comply with permit and other applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinates and performs plant equipment and system inspections.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, including minor repairs and maintaining lubricant levels in equipment.
  • Participates in reviewing operational policies and makes recommendations.
  • Cleans equipment and assigned areas, including washing filters and removing sludge.
  • Loads and unloads bulk chemicals and supplies.
  • Prepares and coordinates the preparation of reports, records, logs, work orders, and other documentation.
  • Maintains databases and online systems; enters, updates, gathers, compiles, reviews and/or submits information.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED, HiSET, TASC).
  • One year of additional vocational training.
  • Three years of experience in water plant operations.
  • North Carolina B Surface or higher Water Treatment Operator's Certification or equivalent certification from another state.
  • Must be willing and able to obtain a North Carolina Grade A Surface Water Treatment Operator's license within 2 years of hire.
  • Valid, unrestricted North Carolina driver's license or willingness to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to accurately read meters & charts, maintain required state records, & interpret readings to make necessary adjustments to treatment processes.
  • Basic chemistry and mixed arithmetic calculations involving multiplication, addition, subtraction, & division of whole numbers, decimals, & fractions.

Nice-to-haves

  • NC Laboratory Certification.
  • Minimum 1-year experience working with plant systems via SCADA interface.
  • Minimum 1-year experience using a Computerized Maintenance MGT System (CMMS).
