About the position

The Budget Analyst position within the House Appropriations Committee of the State of Florida serves as a technical expert, providing critical analysis and support on budget-related matters. The role involves researching and preparing proposed budgets, analyzing legislation, and assisting legislators in understanding the financial implications of their decisions. The analyst will work closely with committee members and staff to ensure effective communication and implementation of legislative intent.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and summarize proposed legislation to determine its effects on the state and other entities.
  • Research and draft legislation and amendments as directed by committee leadership.
  • Assist in planning committee meetings, including agenda and materials preparation.
  • Monitor the implementation of legislation to ensure legislative intent is met.
  • Brief legislators on issues for discussion in committee or with constituents.
  • Conduct research projects and legislatively mandated studies.
  • Prepare oral and written reports on research and committee work, including recommendations for legislative action.
  • Provide information and problem-solving assistance to legislators and the public.
  • Prepare letters, summaries, and reports on committee issues as requested.
  • Stay informed on new issues affecting assigned responsibilities through various means.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Three years of professional experience in research, analysis, program planning, or administrative work.
  • A master's degree can substitute for one year of required experience.
  • A doctorate can substitute for two years of required experience.
  • Knowledge of state budgeting processes and structure.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office applications and Adobe.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of the Legislative Appropriations System/Planning and Budgeting Subsystem (LASPBS).
  • Experience in state government and legislative rules.
