About the position

The Budget Analyst I position in the Department of Oncology at Wayne State University involves participating in the development, review, and analysis of financial data for budget control and forecasting. The role requires compiling financial data, monitoring budget transfers, preparing materials for presentations, and providing analysis on assigned projects. The analyst will also provide guidance to clerical support personnel and ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development, review, and analysis of financial data for budget control and forecasting purposes.
  • Analyze revenues, expenditures, and related financial information for reporting purposes.
  • Compile and perform analysis of financial and budgetary data, summarizing data for management decision making.
  • Establish and maintain databases and spreadsheets, reviewing data for accuracy.
  • Monitor and process budget transfer requests, ensuring timely transfers and correcting discrepancies.
  • Prepare materials for presentations at fiscal meetings, developing graphics and charts to support analysis.
  • Provide analysis on assigned projects, determining issues and presenting findings clearly.
  • Answer inquiries and explain established policies and procedures to improve departmental efficiency.
  • Review and complete forms ensuring accuracy and conformity with policies and procedures.
  • Assist in processing increases for University employees and reviewing compensation adjustments.
  • Participate in special projects, researching and compiling data for detailed reports.
  • Provide work leadership to subordinate clerical/technical support personnel.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business administration, accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Some knowledge of accounting, finance, or budgeting principles and practices.
  • Ability to prepare standard financial statements, reports, and analyses.
  • Some knowledge of computerized accounting systems and computer applications.
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Good oral and/or written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a similar role such as Accounting Specialist or Accounting Assistant.
