About the position

The Budget Analyst at Spelman College serves as the primary financial administrator for restricted funding, responsible for the setup, monitoring, and closeout of budgets. This role involves providing guidance and support to principal investigators and budget managers on budget preparation and maintenance, ensuring compliance with grant agreements, and collaborating with various departments to achieve the college's financial goals.

Responsibilities

  • Set up grant budgets and prepare financial status reports for restricted budgets.
  • Collaborate with Research Development and Sponsored Programs to ensure proper recording of new grant funding and submission of closeout documentation to funding agencies.
  • Reconcile grant cash and review requisitions and invoices for approval.
  • Communicate with Principal Investigators regarding budget setup or adjustments.
  • Assist in the preparation of the College's operating budget utilizing Anaplan, Microsoft Excel, and BANNER software.
  • Approve and process budget adjustments in accordance with grant agreements and college policies.
  • Work with budget managers to remediate budget deficits and assist department heads in budget preparation and maintenance.
  • Communicate the status and availability of funds to budget managers for decision-making regarding budget reallocation.
  • Review general ledger to ensure proper processing of journal entries by the Budgets and Contracts Office.
  • Review and approve faculty and staff requests for supplemental pay.
  • Collect and analyze financial data, maintaining departmental data and management systems.
  • Recommend modifications to processes and procedures to improve compliance and operational efficiencies.
  • Partner with others across the campus to achieve College goals, including training on processes and collaboration in cross-functional teams.
  • Lead or participate in initiatives to improve budgeting processes, reporting, and system tools.
  • Produce ad hoc reports as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
  • Three years of experience in accounting or finance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to interact with diverse populations and exercise tact and diplomacy.
  • Familiarity with college research resources and ability to handle sensitive information.
