About the position

The Budget Analyst position at Wichita Public Schools is a full-time role that plays a crucial part in supporting the District's annual budget, Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, Kansas State budget forms, and the annual financial audit. This position requires collaboration with various departments within the District and involves training building personnel while addressing their inquiries throughout the year. The Budget Analyst will be responsible for the essential duties associated with the preparation of the district's budget, monitoring budgets for applicable funds, programs, and schools, and ensuring compliance with internal and external reporting requirements, including those mandated by the Kansas State Department of Education. In this role, the Budget Analyst will assist in the preparation of the Kansas State budget forms, ensuring accuracy and timeliness, and will also contribute to the annual budget book and the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. The position requires the preparation of journal entries and budget transactions to maintain the district's budget within the financial system, as well as the preparation of work papers and adjusting journal entries for the annual financial audit. The Budget Analyst will become highly knowledgeable about assigned funds, programs, and schools, and will schedule quarterly budget review meetings with fund and program managers. Additionally, the Budget Analyst will respond professionally to inquiries from program managers, employees, and the community regarding budget-related matters. The role includes cross-training on other positions within the Budget Department and attending training and seminars as approved. The position may require some overtime and attendance at required meetings, and the ability to use various office equipment, including SMART boards and iPads, is essential. Limited travel between schools and central offices may also be required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides essential duties in support of the annual preparation of the district's budget
  • Monitors budgets for applicable funds, programs and schools
  • Completes reports required for internal and external compliance, including information for the Kansas State Department of Education
  • Provides on-going training to staff throughout the District on the use of the financial system
  • Assists in the preparation of the Kansas State budget forms, assuring accuracy and timeliness
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual budget book, assuring accuracy and timeliness
  • Assists in preparation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, assuring accuracy and timeliness
  • Prepares journal entries and budget transactions essential to maintaining the district's budget
  • Prepares work papers and adjusting journal entries for the annual financial audit
  • Schedules quarterly budget review meetings with fund and program managers
  • Responds to inquiries and requests for assistance from program managers, employees, and the community regarding the budget
  • Cross-trains on other positions in the Budget Department
  • Attends training and other outside seminars as approved
  • Ensures important functions are covered by other staff members during absences

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • One to two years of accounting or finance related experience preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field preferred
  • Experience in governmental accounting or governmental auditing preferred
  • Advanced computer proficiency and the ability to effectively use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and PowerPoint
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and written effectively
  • Ability to plan, organize, make decisions and prioritize work
  • Exhibit a professional manner and a positive attitude
  • Knowledge of company's mission, purpose, goals and the role of every employee in achieving them

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in governmental accounting or governmental auditing preferred
