About the position

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Budget Analyst for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). The Budget Analyst is responsible for financial planning and budget analysis for IP&O Cost Centers and Responsibility Centers. This role involves providing timely reporting to IP&O leadership as well as external units such as the central budget office and chancellor lead units' business staff related to budget modeling, analysis, and forecast projections. The analyst will prepare independent analyses of financial data and create financial documents and reports for internal purposes. The Budget Analyst will monitor, verify, and report on the consolidation of month-end close, quarterly projections, and year-end projections and financial statements. With limited direction, the analyst will gather budgetary data for modeling, projecting, forecasting, and planning; analyze P&L accounts; review and consolidate all salary improvement program implementations; and manage other special projects. It is essential for the Budget Analyst to build a strong understanding of the business-level details that enable them to identify trends, opportunities, and critical issues impacting the budget. Additionally, the Budget Analyst will identify business intelligence, financial reporting, and financial budget analysis needs. The individual will be accountable for facilitating information gathering, structured documentation, and presentation of funding to senior leaders within IP&O and externally. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills are crucial, as the analyst will work closely with executives to strategize and develop long-term plans that enhance productivity and success for IP&O.

Responsibilities

  • Provide timely reporting to IP&O leadership and external units related to budget modeling, analysis, and forecast projections.
  • Prepare independent analyses of financial data and create financial documents and reports for internal purposes.
  • Monitor, verify, and report on the consolidation of month-end close, quarterly projections, and year-end projections and financial statements.
  • Gather budgetary data for modeling, projecting, forecasting, and planning with limited direction.
  • Analyze P&L accounts and review and consolidate all salary improvement program implementations.
  • Identify trends, opportunities, and critical issues impacting the budget.
  • Identify business intelligence, financial reporting, and financial budget analysis needs.
  • Facilitate information gathering, structured documentation, and presentation of funding to senior leaders within IP&O and externally.
  • Work closely with executives to strategize and develop long-term plans for productivity and success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices (GAAP).
  • A minimum of five years experience in financial analysis, budgeting, or other relevant area.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), with advanced knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent financial analytical skills and a solid understanding of database structure with the ability to manipulate complex data from multiple sources.
  • Strong work ethic, ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously, detail-oriented and highly organized.
  • Knowledge and experience with journal entries, financial statement preparation, and general accounting concepts.
