About the position

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking a highly-skilled and adaptive Budget Analyst to join the School of Medicine (SOM) Finance Team. This position reports to the SOM Finance & Operations Manager and is crucial for leading financial planning and analytics within the Office of the Dean. The ideal candidate will possess expert-level financial acumen and practical experience in fund accounting and financial analysis, which will be essential for driving data-based decision-making. The Budget Analyst will be responsible for understanding the complexities of one of the largest schools of medicine in the country, requiring exceptional analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a proven track record of leveraging data to inform business strategy. In this role, the Budget Analyst will support two key areas: the general fund and Shared Services financial planning and support. The general fund is used to account for major revenue and expenses related to the university's missions of instruction, research, and public service. The Budget Analyst will participate in the development of the annual School of Medicine Budget and will collaborate with various departments to promote transparency and efficiency in financial processes. This position requires a combination of technical expertise, business acumen, strategic planning capabilities, and strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams. The Budget Analyst will lead the completion and submission of the School of Medicine Dean's General Fund Budget, serve as a resource for departments in budget completion, and provide leadership in budget development and financial analysis for Shared Services programs. Additionally, the role involves collaborating on Tuition and Fee proposals and developing materials for the annual State of the School Facts and Figures. The position is expected to work onsite during the training period, with potential for a flexible hybrid model thereafter.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as collaborative lead and subject matter expert for finance and accounting for the School of Medicine.
  • Provide excellent customer service, training, and mentoring on budget reporting and financial matters to SOM Finance constituents.
  • Collaborate with SOM HR, IT, Faculty Affairs, and other administrative units to promote transparency and efficiency.
  • Coordinate with Shared Services leadership on annual planning and business development initiatives.
  • Develop and enhance Shared Services monthly financial reporting processes.
  • Lead the completion and submission of the School of Medicine Dean's General Fund Budget.
  • Support departments in the completion of their General Fund budgets.
  • Lead the budget development and monthly financial analysis for Shared Services programs.
  • Participate in the salary setting process for faculty and staff within the School of Medicine.
  • Collaborate in the completion of Tuition and Fee proposals for School of Medicine education programs.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in business, business administration, finance, accounting, healthcare administration, public administration, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in a finance-related role developing all-funds budgets and strategic contributions to enhancing budgeting processes.
  • Extensive knowledge and expertise in budgeting, financing, and accounting within a higher education setting.
  • Ability to translate business objectives into financial planning documents and present business concepts to both financial and non-financial professionals.
  • Advanced analytical abilities and skills to address significant issues and demonstrate judgment to resolve complex problems.
  • Exceptional Excel skills and experience creating financial models and analysis.

Nice-to-haves

  • Four (4) or more years of experience in a financial role within a university or healthcare institution.
  • Extensive experience with University and CU Medicine financial systems such as PeopleSoft Finance, AX, M-fin reporting.
  • Experience using business intelligence reporting tools.
  • Experience serving as a resource for others in a variety of financial matters.
