About the position

The Budget Planning Analyst at Wayne State University plays a crucial role in supporting the university's strategic planning and decision-making processes. This position involves transforming data into actionable insights through the development of Business Intelligence reporting and dashboards. The analyst will coordinate the preparation and implementation of the university budget, performing complex analyses of fiscal data to ensure effective budget control and forecasting.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily operations of the department by compiling data for fiscal projections and reports.
  • Provide assistance to administrators in interpreting and implementing budgetary policies and procedures.
  • Identify and interpret relevant data sources for budget formula calculations and comparisons.
  • Develop, recommend, and modify budget policies and procedures to improve resource allocation efficiency.
  • Compile information regarding budget and account activities, personnel rosters, and budget documents.
  • Monitor and reconcile budgets and accounts for compliance with established policies.
  • Develop and conduct presentations to support budgetary analysis and provide recommendations.
  • Assist in processing salary budget increases for AAUP-AFT bargaining unit members.
  • Participate in special projects requiring data compilation and analysis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of job-related experience, preferably 3 years or more in budget analysis or accounting.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to work independently and solve problems.
  • Excellent organizational skills to prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Technical knowledge of financial systems and data flows, including accounting principles and budget practices.
  • Proficiency in reporting analytics solutions such as Cognos Analytics, Power BI, Tableau, and MS Excel.
  • Expert knowledge of data extraction methodologies and associated computer languages like SQL and Python.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Banner Finance and Banner Student or equivalent systems.
  • Experience with data visualization design and delivery.
  • Familiarity with statistical software and query languages.
