About the position

The Budget Planning Analyst at Wayne State University plays a crucial role in supporting the university's strategic planning and decision-making processes. This position involves transforming data into actionable insights through the development of Business Intelligence reporting and dashboards. The analyst will coordinate the preparation and implementation of the university budget, performing complex analyses of fiscal data to ensure effective budget control and forecasting.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily operations of the department and compile data for fiscal projections and reports.
  • Develop and modify models to provide current data and research standards for resource recommendations.
  • Advise administrators on budgetary policy and procedures to ensure compliance with university controls.
  • Identify and interpret relevant data sources for budget calculations and comparisons.
  • Perform in-depth analysis of unique problems to provide budget recommendations and justifications.
  • Develop and recommend budget policies to improve departmental resource allocation efficiency.
  • Compile information regarding budget activities and monitor compliance with policies.
  • Conduct presentations to support budgetary analysis and respond to inquiries.
  • Assist in processing salary budget increases for AAUP-AFT bargaining unit members.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of job-related experience, preferably 3 years or equivalent experience as a budget analyst or accountant.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to work independently and solve problems.
  • Excellent organizational skills to prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Technical knowledge of financial systems, accounting principles, and budget practices.
  • Proficiency in data management and the ability to analyze and represent data graphically.
  • Knowledge of reporting analytics solutions such as Cognos Analytics, Power BI, Tableau, and MS Excel.
  • Expertise in data extraction methodologies and associated computer languages like SQL and Python.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Banner Finance and Banner Student or equivalent systems.
  • Knowledge of data collection and analysis techniques across large institutions.
  • Familiarity with statistical software and query languages.
