About the position

The Budget Research Analyst at the New York City Comptroller's Office plays a crucial role in supporting the Bureau of Budget by conducting research, monitoring, and reporting on various topics that impact the City’s budget. This position emphasizes transparency in City spending and fiscal policies, requiring strong analytical skills to produce clear findings and recommendations based on quantitative data.

Responsibilities

  • Create and publish data products, including reports, dashboards, charts and graphs, models, and databases regarding various aspects of the City's budget.
  • Update, maintain, and/or improve the Bureau's existing databases, dashboards, and reports by running regular reports and merging data sets.
  • Monitor New York City's expense budget, with particular focus on assigned issue areas and agencies.
  • Analyze technical budget documents and spending reports.
  • Assist in writing assigned sections for Charter-mandated reports on the City's budget, with a keen eye to potential risks and unaccounted for costs.
  • Follow current events, policy, and legislative proposals and identify timely and salient issues for analysis and research.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Budget Bureau, as well as other Bureaus within the Office. Engage with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and other City agencies.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities, as may be required.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Public Policy Analysis/Administration, Urban Studies, Economics, or Finance, or a closely related field and one (1) or more years of professional experience in budgetary planning/management, financial analysis, public policy analysis, and/or administration in a government agency or non-profit, or a private entity; or a Bachelor's Degree and three (3) or more years of experience in the same fields.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; or a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of full-time experience in budgetary planning, financial analysis, management or engineering.
