About the position

The Budget Systems Analyst at the University of Montana plays a crucial role in providing analytical support to the University Budget Office within the Operations and Finance Sector. This position requires independent judgment and minimal supervision to facilitate planning, budgeting, and analysis functions. The analyst will serve as the technical lead, utilizing systems analysis and project management techniques to address business and data challenges, ultimately supporting the university's objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Retrieve and analyze data to support strategic decision-making, planning, and operational effectiveness across college departments.
  • Collaborate with university constituents, use data visualization tools, and apply statistical techniques for actionable insights.
  • Provide complex analytical support and financial management expertise, including designing reports for financial planning and program reviews.
  • Utilize budgeting software and data analytic tools to create, maintain, and publish queries, reports, visualizations, dashboards, and metrics for internal and external use.
  • Play a key role in the annual setup of labor and operating budgets, administer position budgets, troubleshoot problems, and resolve errors.
  • Maintain data interfaces, reporting, setup, and maintenance of Budgeting and Forecasting software, including reconciling daily imports and resolving data integration errors.
  • Collaborate with end-users and departmental directors to understand information needs, develop reports, and provide expert data insights based on Ellucian Banner data attributes.
  • Supervise and manage classified staff members or student employees.
  • Be willing and able to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in management information systems, information technology or related field, plus (3) years equivalent experience, or any combination of experience, certification, and/or education.
  • Knowledge of relational database and associated toolset (SQL, PL/SQL).
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and see the big picture to identify the appropriate metrics and data application.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of designing user interfaces and writing reports using an industry standard report writing tool (Argos, Axiom Budgeting Software).
  • Ability to maintain effective attention to detail, meeting deadlines, multi-tasking, and prioritizing competing demands.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Exceptional skills using spreadsheet, database query and financial modeling software.
  • Experience with Ellucian Banner Suite and/or Axiom Budgeting Solutions Software, SQL certification.
  • Experience in working with a Human Resources, or Finance information system of a higher education institution.
