About the position

The Building Automation Engineer (BAS Facilities Engineer II) at Medtronic will play a crucial role in overseeing the Enterprise Building Automation System (BAS). This hybrid position requires the candidate to be within driving distance of Minneapolis, MN, and involves providing technical oversight for engineering, design, installation, service, upgrades, usage, and repairs of the BAS. The engineer will be responsible for leading and managing milestones within BAS facility projects, ensuring that the BAS expertise is applied to large facility infrastructure projects, and driving the standardization of the Enterprise BAS. Additionally, the role involves optimizing HVAC and electrical systems, maintaining existing BAS infrastructure, and facilitating continuous improvements to BAS components, processes, and procedures. In this position, the engineer will independently interact with key customers, mechanics, and management to enhance operating efficiency and troubleshoot building systems effectively. The responsibilities include leading the continuous improvement of Medtronic BAS Standards and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), reviewing engineering drawings and specifications for facility infrastructure projects, and managing financial aspects of BAS projects. The engineer will also oversee the creation and maintenance of BAS schematics and drawings, ensuring compliance with BAS standards, and will lead contractors in the installation and programming of BAS components. The role requires performing installation, programming, inspection, testing, and repair of various control equipment, as well as routine preventative maintenance on BAS sensors and devices. The engineer will participate in long-term BAS strategy and contingency planning, provide training to maintenance staff on BAS operations, and support off-hours operations as needed. Documentation of work performed, root causes, and resolutions in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is also a key responsibility. The position may involve leading and training lower-level employees and overseeing daily operations of a work team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead continuous improvement of, advance to, and modifications of Medtronic BAS Standards and SOP's
  • Review mark-up engineering drawings, specifications, and equipment/system designs for facility infrastructure projects
  • Perform commissioning documentation creation, review, & execution along with BAS Validation efforts
  • Manage and/or provide oversight on small to moderately sized BAS-related projects or milestones within larger projects, from concept through execution
  • Manage financial aspects of BAS projects/initiatives including drafting and submitting RFP/bid documents, creating/tracking purchase orders, capital expenditure requests
  • Independently set objectives aimed at completing assigned tasks/projects
  • Provide oversight to the creation and maintenance of BAS schematics, drawings, and graphics to ensure adherence to BAS Standards
  • Lead/manage contractors performing installation and programming on any/all BAS components
  • Perform installation, programming inspection, testing and repair of pneumatic, electric, electronic, and digital control equipment
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on various BAS sensors/devices as scheduled by the CMMS
  • Lead HVAC root cause analysis, trending of data, and execute corrective actions promptly
  • Work in controlled cleanroom environments, following all applicable SOPs and guidelines
  • Participate in long term BAS strategy and contingency planning
  • Identify/implement new technology as well as actively monitor/mitigate risks related to equipment end-of-life
  • Provide training to Maintenance/Facility Staff on BAS operations
  • Provide support during off-hours, both onsite and remote as needed
  • Adhere to operational policies, procedures, and safety requirements
  • Document work performed, root cause, and resolutions in a CMMS
  • Train, delegate, and review the work of lower level employees and may be responsible for leading daily operations of a work team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 0 years of experience
  • Excellent mechanical system knowledge (HVAC, electrical, plumbing systems)
  • Experience with BAS design, installation, commissioning, and training
  • Experience with the MS Office software suite
  • Advanced Tridium/Niagara BAS Certification
  • Analytics software experience - Clockworks, Analytika, etc
  • 2-year (or higher) trade school certificate
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • EPA refrigeration 'universal certification'
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience with statistical process control
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, shop drawings, and schematics
  • Self-motivated
  • Experience with integrated building solutions including temperature control, critical environment monitoring, power management and alarming, zoned lighting control and facility access control
  • Experience with Enterprise BAS hardware/systems (Tridium Niagara based Niagara and/or Distech)
  • Experience with automation protocols including Modbus, BACnet, and LonWorks.
