About the position

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled BAS Engineering Technologist to join the Engineering Services Division. This role involves developing, maintaining, and applying engineering capabilities to provide innovative solutions in building automation systems (BAS) and mechanical systems. The successful candidate will contribute to the Conduct of Engineering program and support facilities engineering projects, ensuring reliable and energy-efficient operations of HVAC systems. The position may be filled at either the BAS Engineering Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the candidate's qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide reliable, energy-efficient engineering design and field support for BAS used in facility HVAC operations.
  • Write and modify control sequences, monitor and troubleshoot systems to optimize building equipment operation, energy utilization, indoor air quality, and comfort.
  • Assist HVAC field and maintenance technicians in the installation, repair, replacement, and testing of various components or systems.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting of comfort, energy, indoor air quality, and safety concerns related to HVAC systems and controls.
  • Work with Project Management, Construction, outside contractors, consultants, and controls vendors to install and network controls and sensor data points into the SkySpark software platform.
  • Remain current with state-of-the-art hardware, software, and technology.
  • Investigate and recommend innovative engineering, maintenance, and techniques to improve system operations, maintenance, efficiency, and security (for BAS Engineering Technologist 3).
  • Contribute to the development of standards and improved workflows within Engineering Services (for BAS Engineering Technologist 3).
  • Perform design review and provide input on new building automation controls projects (for BAS Engineering Technologist 3).
  • Design and develop dashboards for BAS Engineering and its customers (for BAS Engineering Technologist 3).
  • Perform advanced data and statistical analysis (for BAS Engineering Technologist 3).

Requirements

  • Demonstrative knowledge in at least one building automation system: Trane, Automated Logic, Alerton, Johnson Controls, Siemens, or Niagra AX.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, including the ability to independently interpret data and produce professional reports.
  • Demonstrative experience in various programming languages (e.g., JAVA, Python, MatLab).
  • General understanding of IP networks.
  • Working knowledge of metrics and formulas used for building energy calculations.
  • High proficiency with personal computers and reading wiring diagrams.
  • Demonstrative knowledge of engineering principles, procedures, and application of technology-aided engineering tools.
  • Certification or demonstrated proficiency in at least two building automation systems (for BAS Engineering Technologist 3).
  • Advanced working experience with related industry codes/standards (for BAS Engineering Technologist 3).
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience (for BAS Engineering Technologist 2).
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or related degree and 8 years of directly related experience (for BAS Engineering Technologist 3).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with industrial control systems and metering devices.
  • Knowledge of information technology architecture and communications networks for industrial control systems, including BACnet, LonWorks, Modbus, MSTP, ARCNET protocols.
  • Experience with energy and HVAC audits or commissioning work.
  • CEM or LEED certification.
  • Experience with Test and Balance.
