About the position

The Building Custodian at Fitchburg School District is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, security, safety, and overall maintenance of the assigned facilities, buildings, grounds, and equipment. This position operates under the direction of the Senior Custodian and reports to the SBM Facility Manager and Site-Based Building Administrator. The custodian plays a crucial role in ensuring that the school environment is safe and welcoming for students and staff. The job involves a variety of tasks including cleaning, housekeeping, and minor maintenance functions for municipal school buildings. The custodian is expected to perform duties such as cleaning floors, washing windows, changing light bulbs, and maintaining order in the school premises. Additionally, the custodian will be responsible for the opening and closing of the school, which includes unlocking and locking doors, turning alarms on and off, and conducting walkthroughs to ensure safety and functionality before student occupancy. The role requires the ability to work effectively with teachers and support staff, and to follow safety protocols when handling cleaning materials and equipment. The custodian must be able to lift up to 75 pounds and stand or walk for extended periods. The working environment may involve exposure to various elements such as odors, dust, and chemical fumes, and may require working in poor outdoor weather conditions. The custodian will also be responsible for reporting any maintenance issues to the Senior Custodian and ensuring that custodial supplies are adequately stocked. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities but requires strong communication skills to maintain effective collaboration with the Senior Custodian and other staff members.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the overall cleanliness and sanitation of assigned facilities, buildings, grounds, and equipment.
• Open and close the school, including unlocking/locking doors and turning alarms on/off.
• Conduct walkthroughs to ensure building safety and functionality prior to student occupancy.
• Perform custodial cleaning of an assigned route and assist in general cleaning throughout the school as directed.
• Monitor and clean bathrooms throughout the day to uphold health and safety standards.
• Follow Universal Precautions and sanitation procedures when handling bodily fluid spills.
• Unclog plumbing and waste traps as needed.
• Perform restoration and maintenance of flooring.
• Maintain custodial equipment and report broken equipment to the Senior Custodian.
• Move and assemble furniture within the assigned building.
• Setup and breakdown for games, events, and meetings.
• Assist in the removal of snow and ice by operating snow blowers and shovels.
• Complete building-based work orders and assignments issued by the Senior Custodian.
• Ensure building-wide cleaning operations are carried out and inform the Senior Custodian of needed custodial supplies.
• Perform daily checks of all mechanical spaces and report any unusual conditions.
• Take immediate action to control and limit damage by fire or flood if safe to do so.
• Replace needed lightbulbs and classroom air filters as directed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
