About the position

We are seeking a commercial Building Engineer to join our federal team supporting the National Defense University (NDU) site in Arlington, VA. Our dedicated team operates, maintains, and repairs all building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems, with a primary focus on electrical. At Johnson Controls, we support our nation’s most critical facilities, the people who occupy them, and the missions they enable. Johnson Controls Federal Systems (JCFS) is a specialized team serving as a trusted partner to the federal government. We help modernize U.S. military installations, Department of Defense, and other federal agency facilities to be smarter, more resilient, efficient, sustainable, and secure. As a Building Engineer, you will perform routine inspections of building systems and equipment to ensure proper operation. You will conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems, diagnose and repair malfunctions in building systems and equipment, and respond to emergency maintenance requests promptly and effectively. Maintaining accurate records of maintenance and repair activities is crucial, as is collaborating with external contractors and vendors as needed. You will also ensure compliance with safety regulations and building codes, assist in the development and implementation of energy-saving initiatives, and provide support for building renovations and new construction projects. Maintaining a clean and organized work environment is essential to your role.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspections of building systems and equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Diagnose and repair malfunctions in building systems and equipment.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance requests promptly and effectively.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair activities.
  • Collaborate with external contractors and vendors as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and building codes.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of energy-saving initiatives.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in building maintenance or engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial or industrial electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in using maintenance management software and tools.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances and/or badges.

Nice-to-haves

  • Electrical apprenticeship or formal training in electrical installation techniques.
  • Licensed Electrician
  • OSHA 10 or 30 certifications.
