About the position

Drew University is seeking a Building Electrical Engineer to join its Facilities Department. This full-time position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week and is essential for maintaining the electrical infrastructure of the university. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing various types of electrical equipment, including commercial, light industrial, and residential systems. The role involves a variety of tasks that ensure the safety and functionality of electrical systems across the campus, contributing to a conducive learning environment for students and faculty alike. The Building Electrical Engineer will be responsible for a range of duties, including the installation and repair of electric panels, wiring, circuit breakers, and lighting systems. This position also requires maintaining an inventory of electrical components and supplies, obtaining competitive quotes, and placing orders with vendors. The engineer will conduct tests on electrical systems to ensure they are functioning correctly and will maintain the campus's exterior lighting systems. Collaboration with other team members is essential, particularly in assisting with the installation and repair of access control, HVAC, and plumbing-related electrical components. In addition to technical skills, the role demands a commitment to workplace safety and environmental practices. The engineer will coordinate and inspect work performed by outside contractors, estimate time and materials for repairs, and process necessary paperwork, including work orders and preventative maintenance forms. The position also includes a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours emergencies, requiring the engineer to be available for urgent issues that may arise outside of regular working hours. Overall, this role is critical in ensuring that Drew University’s electrical systems are safe, efficient, and up to code, thereby supporting the university's mission of providing quality education.

Responsibilities

  • Install, examine, replace or repair electric panels, electrical and lighting system wiring, circuit breakers, fuses, receptacles, switch boxes, conduits, feeders, light fixtures, ballasts, emergency ballasts and other electrical and lighting system components.
  • Maintain campus electric and lighting component, material, parts and supply inventories, obtains competitive quotes for components, materials, parts and supplies and competitive bids for electrical and lighting system repairs and services, places order with vendors after the purchase has been approved, notifies leadership when inventory levels are low with the appropriate amount of lead time to ensure work is completed on time.
  • Test electrical and lighting system components, equipment and wiring for continuity, current, voltage and resistance.
  • Maintain, install and repair campus exterior lighting system including pole lights, timers and photocells.
  • Assist other team members as needed with the installation and repair of access control, HVAC and plumbing related electrical components, such as, but not limited to contactors, motors, pumps, starters, wiring, etc.
  • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment, supplies and tools; promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Understand and demonstrate knowledge of electric and lighting codes and practices; coordinate work between and with other trades.
  • Coordinate and inspect work performed by outside contractors.
  • Estimate time and materials needed to complete repairs.
  • Process paperwork including, but not limited to work orders, inventory, and preventative maintenance forms.
  • Complete and track preventative maintenance as scheduled.
  • Work with a rotating on call schedule and after hours recall.
  • Process hot work permits and perform necessary fire watch procedures and inspections.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 5 - 10 years in commercial and light industrial electric work
  • Arc Flash Trained
  • Able to communicate through computer email, telephone, two-way radio systems and cell phone.
  • Able to work a rotating on call schedule and after-hours emergency response.
  • Able to work some overtime weekend and holiday coverage when scheduled.
  • Normal mobility to move around campus and campus buildings.
  • Able to bend, stoop, twist, climb up and down ladders.
  • Able to lift and carry 50 pounds, including up and down stairs.
  • Strong English written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • The employee is subject to outside environmental conditions.
  • Able to understand plans, design specifications, and manufacturer' instructions.
  • Competency using tools and operating equipment.
  • US Driver's License required; able to drive an automobile, van, light truck or utility vehicle.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of safe operating procedures including Lock Out/Tag Out.
  • Familiar with variable frequency drives, three phase and single phase, generators and inverters.
  • Ability to troubleshoot low and high voltage issues.
  • Ability to understand and apply industry standards for installation, repairs and safety.
  • Ability to operate power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to operate computer-based equipment.
  • Familiarity with computerized CMMS work order process.
