About the position

The Building Inspector I/II position at the City of Modesto is a full-time role focused on ensuring safety and compliance in construction projects. The inspector will conduct inspections of residential and commercial properties, manage essential records, and provide guidance to the community regarding building regulations. This role is vital in maintaining the integrity of construction practices and contributing to the overall safety and quality of the built environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of building construction and its components in residential, commercial, and industrial applications to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
  • Examine, evaluate, and approve the construction of structural framing systems in compliance with Title 24, Title 25, and applicable fire, life, and health and safety requirements.
  • Examine completed construction and general workmanship prior to occupancy; maintain plan files, progress reports, and properly complete permit inspection records.
  • Investigate alleged violations of zoning ordinances and related policies.
  • Perform inspection duties in trade specialties such as plumbing, electrical, mechanical, structural, and finish trade areas.
  • Inspect foundation, cement, framing, plastering, plumbing, heating, and electrical installations for compliance with applicable codes and standards of workmanship.
  • Review plans, schedules, and specifications for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Confer with architects, contractors, builders, and the general public in the field and office; prepare correspondence as required.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in building inspection technology or a related field.
  • Four years of increasingly responsible journey-level construction experience in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical systems, or a related field.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license.
  • Possession of a Certified Building Inspector certificate issued by the International Code Council (ICC) is desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in one or more of the following building trades: plumbing, electrical, or mechanical.
  • Experience working independently with minimal supervision.
