About the position

The Building Maintenance Mechanic 1-2 position at Ramsey County involves operating, maintaining, repairing, and replacing mechanical equipment within the physical plant, including HVAC, security, and fire safety systems. The role includes general building maintenance, grounds keeping, and responding to emergency situations. This position is part of a career development series, with on-the-job training provided.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, repair and/or replace mechanical equipment of the physical plant.
  • Perform grounds keeping and general building maintenance at assigned County facilities.
  • Order and maintain supplies used in building maintenance.
  • Respond to 24/7 emergency call-back schedule as assigned.
  • Prioritize preventive maintenance and repair requests.
  • Assist in maintaining heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
  • Monitor and document plant operations, making necessary adjustments.
  • Operate, repair and maintain security, fire and life safety systems.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of energy conservation measures.
  • Maintain faucets, showers, sinks and toilets.
  • Inspect, repair and maintain light fixtures and controls.
  • Perform preventive maintenance by changing belts and filters.
  • Maintain grounds using hand and power tools.
  • Order and maintain inventories of parts and supplies.
  • Perform and keep records of scheduled tests of life safety equipment.

Requirements

  • One-year vocational certification or equivalent in HVACR, building/systems, custodial services or related field.
  • One year of experience maintaining and making repairs to commercial buildings.
  • Must have and maintain a valid class D driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain a State of Minnesota Special Engineer Boiler's license within 6 months of employment.
  • Two-year vocational certification or equivalent in HVACR, building/systems or related field for Mechanic 2.
  • Three years of experience making repairs to a large commercial office building for Mechanic 2.

Nice-to-haves
