About the position

The Building Maintenance Mechanic II position at Oklahoma State University involves providing comprehensive facilities support for research laboratories within the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology (CEAT). The role includes supervising maintenance operations, ensuring safety compliance, and managing hazardous materials. The mechanic will also be responsible for training student assistants and maintaining building systems to support research activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide all aspects of facilities support for research laboratories.
  • Serve as the CEAT facility operation liaison.
  • Identify facility and facility systems discrepancies and facilitate corrective action.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student assistants.
  • Supervise and conduct MEP maintenance for lab equipment, instrumentation, and materials.
  • Ensure building systems provide adequate support for research.
  • Manage the Advanced Technology Research Center (ATRC) Safety Program.
  • Facilitate implementation and adherence to safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Conduct training on safety and research support operations.
  • Coordinate hazardous materials/surplus waste acquisition, storage, and disposal.
  • Advise faculty/staff on safe packaging, usage, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Coordinate regular inspection and maintenance of hazardous materials equipment.

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED with three years prior successful experience in electrical, HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, and basic electrical and plumbing maintenance.
  • Equivalent of 600 hours of vocational/technical education in related building trade field plus two years prior successful maintenance experience in a university, commercial, or industrial maintenance organization.
  • Valid driver's license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle.
  • Skilled in mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment construction, design, and repair.
  • Trained in hazardous materials policies/procedures and able to develop a good working relationship with the campus Environmental Health and Safety Department.
  • Good understanding of laboratory operations and support systems and building systems.
  • Experience as a forklift operator.
  • Ability to detect odors characteristic of machine shop, chemical lab, or equipment environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills while working with students, faculty, staff, and the public.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical & Electrical Technology or related field.
  • Basic Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP) skills with a strong emphasis on electrical skills.
  • Basic carpentry skills.
  • Experience with HVAC and electrical systems.
  • Autoclave maintenance experience.
  • RO/DI water maintenance experience.
  • Blueprint and Construction Documentation reading skills.
  • Controls and electrical schematic reading skills.
  • General proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Adobe Acrobat.
