About the position

The Building Maintenance Technician plays a crucial role in supporting the Building Superintendent by performing a variety of general maintenance, repair, and cleaning duties to ensure that all Lincoln County buildings are safe and well-maintained. This position is essential for maintaining the functionality and appearance of the facilities, which includes both interior and exterior maintenance tasks. The technician will be involved in a range of activities from grounds maintenance to minor repairs of fixtures and equipment, ensuring that the buildings are not only clean but also operationally sound. The role requires a proactive approach to maintenance, with responsibilities that extend to routine cleaning tasks as needed, contributing to a safe and welcoming environment for all building users. In addition to general maintenance, the technician will be responsible for performing specific tasks such as remodeling, sheet rocking, and finish carpentry. This hands-on role also involves the installation, dismantling, and moving of various types of office furniture and equipment, which requires physical strength and dexterity. The technician will troubleshoot minor electrical issues and repair or replace plumbing fixtures, showcasing a diverse skill set in building maintenance. Operating various types of equipment, including bobcats, forklifts, lawnmowers, and snow removal equipment, is also a key part of the job, emphasizing the need for versatility and adaptability in different maintenance scenarios. The technician will also engage in grounds maintenance activities, which include mowing, trimming lawns and shrubs, and ensuring that the courthouse grounds are free of debris and trash. In inclement weather, snow removal from sidewalks, steps, and entrances is a critical responsibility to maintain safety for all visitors. Routine cleaning procedures and floor care are also part of the job, ensuring that all areas are kept in pristine condition. The technician will be tasked with emptying garbage and replenishing supplies, as well as maintaining, repairing, and replacing institutional locks and electronic security systems to ensure the security of the buildings. Continuous learning is encouraged, as the technician will attend classes and seminars regarding safety and new techniques for building maintenance, ensuring that they remain up-to-date with industry standards and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Perform interior and exterior building maintenance including remodeling, sheet rocking, and finish carpentry.
  • Install, dismantle, and move all types of office furniture and equipment.
  • Repair and replace plumbing fixtures.
  • Troubleshoot minor electrical issues.
  • Operate equipment including bobcats, forklifts, lawnmowers, trucks, snow removal equipment, generators, air compressors, and chain hoists.
  • Perform duties such as mowing and trimming lawns and shrubs.
  • Pick up debris and trash on courthouse grounds.
  • Snow removal from sidewalks, steps, and entrances in inclement weather.
  • Assist with routine cleaning procedures and floor care.
  • Empty garbage and replenish supplies.
  • Maintain, repair, and replace institutional locks, electronic security systems, and various types of hardware.
  • Ensure entrances and doors are secure.
  • Attend classes and seminars regarding safety and new techniques for building maintenance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED plus two years of general building maintenance or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check and a physical examination.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Possession of South Dakota Pesticide Applicator's License or ability to attain license within 60 days.

Nice-to-haves
