About the position

The Building Official Manager is responsible for directing the operations of the Building Division within the Planning and Protective Services Department of Jefferson City. This role involves managing building inspections, enforcing state laws and local ordinances, and ensuring the safety and compliance of construction projects. The position requires exceptional leadership and communication skills to support the growth and development of the community while providing excellent customer service to contractors, builders, and citizens.

Responsibilities

  • Function as the Building Official for the City, administering and enforcing municipal ordinances and adopted codes.
  • Direct day-to-day operations of personnel providing inspection, regulatory, and code enforcement services.
  • Provide and monitor staff development to ensure appropriate expertise within the division.
  • Review building plans and inspect various types of buildings for compliance with codes and approved plans.
  • Provide exceptional customer service during the plan approval and inspection processes.
  • Support and assist boards and commissions as required, attending meetings and providing leadership as needed.
  • Coordinate with Code Enforcement and the Fire Department on code compliance activities.
  • Attend meetings of the Development Review Committee and coordinate plan reviews with other departments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in construction science, construction management, architecture, engineering, or a related area.
  • At least five years of professional work experience related to building design and construction, code review or enforcement, with at least two years of supervisory and management level experience.
  • Valid Missouri driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain ICC Certified Building Official certification within one year of hire.

  • Experience using SmartGov or other permitting software.
