About the position

WSP is currently seeking a Building Senior Structural Engineer for our New York City office. This role is integral to our Buildings Structures Division, where you will be involved in various projects that align with our clients' objectives and address their challenges. As a senior-level technical engineer, you will provide professional oversight and direction to junior staff, ensuring that all engineering designs meet applicable codes and standards. Your responsibilities will encompass all phases of project development, from conceptual feasibility studies to final construction documents, as well as construction phase services. You will also perform and manage field inspections at project sites, ensuring quality and compliance throughout the project lifecycle. In this position, you will independently develop and apply advanced engineering techniques to unique engineering problems, design elements of multidisciplinary projects, and lead the creation of new conceptual designs. You will supervise and evaluate the work of junior engineering staff, promoting a culture conducive to quality and accountability. Your role will require you to actively coordinate with internal and external team members, manage structural design for multiple projects, and develop strong relationships with clients, becoming a trusted partner in identifying their key interests and drivers. Additionally, you will be responsible for exercising ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhering to WSP's Code of Conduct. Responsibilities

  • Provide professional oversight and direction to junior staff.
  • Serve as the senior level technical engineer in the area of Building Structures.
  • Independently develop and apply advanced engineering techniques to unique engineering problems.
  • Design elements of multidisciplinary projects for new construction and modifications to existing structures.
  • Perform/manage field inspections at project sites.
  • Perform standard and complex structural engineering analyses, designs, and calculations.
  • Ensure all engineering designs meet applicable codes and standards.
  • Lead and create new conceptual designs and oversee the work of junior staff.
  • Support technical requests from current and proposed customers.
  • Supervise, develop, evaluate, and assign work to junior engineering staff.
  • Promote a culture conducive to quality.
  • Manage structural design for multiple projects, including engineering schedule and budget performance.
  • Actively coordinate with other internal/external team members.
  • Develop strong relationships with clients and identify key client interests.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant post-education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural or civil design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Proficient knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, and processes.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.
  • Working knowledge of sustainability processes and reducing hazardous substances.
  • Knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Ability to make technical computations and calculations.
  • Project management experience with small to mid-level projects.
  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on construction and design aspects.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail and multi-tasking.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance to junior team members.
  • Proficiency with technical writing and discipline-specific design software.
  • Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to direct others in the field to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety.
