About the position

The Building Service Engineer at CSUN is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and water systems. This role involves ensuring optimal performance of HVAC systems, responding to service requests, and maintaining logs of maintenance activities. The engineer will also be involved in emergency repairs and will work closely with building automation systems to enhance energy efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, repair, and inspect heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and water systems.
  • Test and chemically treat boilers, condensers, and chilled water systems.
  • Diagnose and make emergency repairs to hydronic, natural gas, water, refrigerant, and air distribution systems.
  • Monitor building automation systems data and adjust systems accordingly.
  • Respond to service requests to adjust temperature for individual rooms or buildings.
  • Maintain maintenance and repair logs using manual and computerized recordkeeping systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs of HVAC systems.
  • Inspect campus lighting and report issues for repair by the electric shop.
  • Contact management in the event of a campus emergency or utility outage.

Requirements

  • Two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems or equivalent combination of formal coursework and hands-on experience.
  • Valid California Driver's License.
  • Thorough knowledge of high- and low-pressure boilers, HVAC systems, and mechanical equipment.
  • Working knowledge of energy management systems and applicable safety codes and regulations.
  • Ability to install, operate, and repair HVAC equipment and systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with building automation systems.
  • Knowledge of energy optimization techniques.
  • Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
