About the position

The Bus Driver position at San Antonio ISD involves the safe and efficient transportation of students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or designated locations. This role is critical in ensuring that students arrive at their destinations safely and on time. The position requires operating a school bus or other vehicles while adhering to all traffic laws and district policies. Bus drivers are expected to maintain their vehicles, perform pre-trip inspections, and report any mechanical issues or damages. They will also be responsible for driving assigned routes, including extracurricular activity routes, and must be available for AM and PM school routes, field trips, and other assignments as directed by the Transportation Department. In addition to driving responsibilities, bus drivers must supervise student behavior on the bus, instruct students on safe riding rules, and ensure the proper condition of emergency equipment. They are required to maintain a clean and fueled bus and assist students during the loading and unloading process. Effective communication with students, parents, school personnel, and co-workers is essential, as is the ability to manage student behaviors effectively. The position also requires compliance with state, district, and federal policies, including maintaining required documentation and reports. The role offers a guaranteed minimum of 20 hours per week, with full employee benefits and paid CDL training. Newly hired individuals with a CDL will receive a $1000 sign-on bonus, while those without a CDL will receive a $500 sign-on bonus. The position is structured for 10 months, totaling 183 days per year, and is classified under Manual Trades, Job Group 4 on the SAISD Compensation Plan.

Responsibilities

  • Operate bus and all related equipment in a safe and efficient manner, obeying all traffic laws in accordance with the policies and procedures of the department.
  • Report involvement in any accident/incident, job-related injury, or passenger injury to immediate supervisor within required timeline. Complete required reports.
  • Maintain bus, perform pre-trip inspections and report mechanical problems, damage to bus (interior and exterior).
  • Drive assigned bus routes and extracurricular activity routes as designated.
  • Must be available to work AM and PM school routes, field trips, and other assignments as directed by the Transportation Department.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
  • Assist students with the load/unload process following prescribed policies and procedures.
  • Supervise behavior of children while on the bus applying effective student management techniques and report misconduct to appropriate administrator/supervisor.
  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and responsibilities as riders including emergency bus evacuation.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with students, parents, school personnel and co-workers.
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, vehicle and all related equipment in accordance with the pre-trip requirement.
  • Report conditions to supervisor that impact your route.
  • Assist with securing appropriate child safety restraint systems.
  • Attend and complete required training.
  • Maintain certification as Texas Bus Driver by the Texas Education Agency.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and federal policies, laws and procedures including daily attendance, punctuality and confidentiality.
  • Compile, maintain and file all reports, records and other required documents applicable to position.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or regional accrediting agency.
  • Valid Texas Class 'B' or 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with required endorsements for school bus driver or class 'C' driver's license.
  • Safe driving record verified by Texas Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability coverage eligibility).
  • Must reside in the state of Texas.
  • Must obtain School Bus Driver Certification (Texas Department of Public Safety) within 90 calendar days of employment.
  • Must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to meet alcohol and controlled substance testing requirements set forth by Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.
  • Ability to pass annual medical examination per Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively including performing basic mathematical skills as related to interpreting map written route procedures and completing reports.
  • Ability to manage student behaviors.
