About the position

The Bus Driver position at the YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge, and South Amboy is a part-time role responsible for ensuring the safety of passengers during transportation. The driver will operate a bus for YMCA participants, adhering to health and safety guidelines while exemplifying the core values of the YMCA: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. The position runs from June 20, 2024, through the end of August 2024, with a commitment of 3-6 hours per day, Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all health and safety guidelines are strictly adhered to.
  • Ensure the safety of all passengers in the bus.
  • Arrive on time (approximately 5 minutes prior to pick-up) at scheduled centers.
  • Confirm delayed openings and school closings with YMCA personnel or as indicated on local radio station.
  • Use the bus only for transportation of YMCA participants unless authorized by a supervisor.
  • Report any ticket, moving violation, or incident affecting driving status to the Human Resource Director and Executive Director immediately.
  • Be a positive, desirable role model for children and parents.
  • Know emergency procedures and implement them if necessary.
  • Report all accidents/incidents to the immediate supervisor as soon as possible and complete the accident/incident report.
  • Ensure that all passengers and the driver are wearing seatbelts at all times.
  • Maintain and submit Vehicle Destination Logs, Gas Logs, and Mileage Logs according to YMCA procedures.
  • Perform a pre-trip inspection checking the bus for safety hazards before use.
  • Ensure the bus has gas and is kept orderly, returning all lost and found items to the appropriate department at the end of the run.
  • Prohibit smoking, eating, and drinking while driving the bus.
  • Drive with extreme courtesy, representing the Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge, and South Amboy YMCA.
  • Prepare and submit Vehicle Maintenance Request forms immediately upon detecting a bus defect or possible defect.
  • Assist children getting on and off the bus.
  • Walk to the back of the bus and back to the front at the end of the bus run to ensure all children have safely gotten off the bus.
  • Possess an operational cell phone (provided by YMCA) and keep it turned on, pulling off the road to operate the phone.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and YMCA training sessions.
  • Adhere to 'House Rules' and exemplify the four core character values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Accurately complete time sheets daily, signing at the end of the week.
  • Communicate with the supervisor any issues or concerns surrounding the transportation of passengers and/or the bus.

Requirements

  • Passenger Endorsement CDL
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Able to meet the Redwoods Vehicle Driver Requirements
  • Able to communicate effectively
  • Must be a minimum of age 21
