About the position

The Bus Monitor position at Durango School District 9-R involves assisting bus drivers in ensuring student safety and managing conduct during transportation. This role is essential for maintaining a positive environment on the bus and providing support to students, particularly those with special needs. The position requires effective communication and the ability to handle various responsibilities related to student supervision and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the bus driver in managing student conduct by monitoring behavior and redirecting inappropriate actions.
  • Help students with loading and unloading from the bus, including those in wheelchairs or strollers.
  • Secure passengers' wheelchairs and strollers, ensuring all safety devices are properly fastened.
  • Maintain the emergency card book for passengers and complete required documentation.
  • Provide written documentation regarding violations of the student code to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist in emergency evacuation plans and drills, and support the driver during emergencies or mechanical failures.
  • Attend training and required meetings, and perform first aid, including CPR, in emergencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid training preferred at hire; required within two months after hire.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training required within three months of hire.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form using positive interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and promote Board of Education policies.
  • Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Knowledge of first aid skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with children.
