About the position

The Business Associate in the Emergency Department at Mount Sinai Hospital is responsible for managing the business aspects of patient care, ensuring a smooth admission process, and maintaining accurate patient data. This role involves interacting with patients, insurance companies, and medical staff to facilitate patient admissions and services, while also providing excellent customer service in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

  • Pre-admits patients to the Medical Center, including taking reservations and obtaining necessary demographic and insurance data.
  • Admits patients by verifying demographic and insurance information, signing forms, collecting deposits, and obtaining authorizations.
  • Acts as a liaison to insurance companies and the Medicaid Eligibility Office, screening requests for medical necessity and obtaining prior authorizations.
  • Maintains census and charge data, updating systems and compiling information for charge capture.
  • Schedules tests and medical procedures, as well as follow-up appointments.
  • Assists in the chart completion process by maintaining and discharging charts in proper order and compiling deficiency data.
  • Greets visitors and answers telephones promptly and courteously, accompanying them to appropriate areas as necessary.
  • Assists patients with guest services such as television and telephone service, securing valuables, etc.
  • Receives and maintains business office inventory for the care center.
  • Handles other duties as assigned, including reporting on lost/found patient property and reviewing death certificates for completion.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least 1 year of previous related work experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Proven data entry and computer skills, including experience with medical databases such as Cerner, IDX, or Eagle.
  • Strong clerical skills, including answering phones and relaying messages.
  • Proven customer service experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Previous experience with insurance pre-certifications and discharging patients.
