About the position

The Business Development Coordinator Certification Officer plays a crucial role in the Office of Business Opportunity (OBO) for the City of Houston. This position is responsible for promoting the growth and success of small businesses, particularly those owned by historically underutilized groups. The officer will review and analyze certification applications, conduct site visits, and provide recommendations to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The role emphasizes educating and connecting businesses to resources and opportunities, ultimately aiming to increase the number and success of diverse businesses in Houston.

Responsibilities

  • Review, analyze, and make recommendations on Certification applications submitted by business owners.
  • Conduct on-site visits to verify the legitimacy of businesses and their operations.
  • Provide recommendations on Certification decisions based on analysis of business ownership and control.
  • Conduct informational pre-certification workshops for business owners.
  • Disseminate information about MWSDBE program requirements to businesses and the public.
  • Compile data and prepare periodic reports as requested.
  • Communicate effectively with various stakeholders including business owners and city officials.
  • Prioritize work effectively and adjust to changing priorities as needed.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Liberal Arts, or a related field.
  • One year of responsible, professional administrative experience.
  • Valid Driver's License compliant with City of Houston policy.
