About the position

UB Business and Entrepreneur Partnerships (BEP) is seeking a Business Development Manager, Physical Sciences to help change the world by fostering innovative research and economic growth in the Western New York community. In this role, you will work with diverse faculty, companies, and community partners to foster research and development collaborations that solve real-world problems and promote workforce development. You will be part of the BEP team and principally support the Center for Material Informatics (CMI). The Business Development Manager, Physical Sciences is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic and long-term plan for engaging corporate partnerships. This includes market analysis, plan development, prospect identification, project development, partner engagement, managing related contracts, and ongoing relationship management. Key responsibilities include connecting industry to the university by developing and implementing a strategic and long-term plan for engaging corporate partnerships, including CMI funded and co-funded research and development projects, proposals with industry partners to New York State grant programs (e.g., FuzeHub, NYSERDA, etc.), and workforce development projects. You will conduct market opportunity analysis and develop a strategic plan regarding industry collaboration that leverages university assets and achieves university corporate engagement and BEP mission. Attending conferences, workshops, and company meetings to develop prospects is also a critical part of this role. Additionally, you will coordinate with internal units, such as BEP Finance, Technology Transfer, and Sponsored Projects Services to develop and formalize industry partnerships through contracts. Collaborating with internal and external parties on the development and implementation of programming, marketing communications, and public relations activities related to business development will also be part of your responsibilities. Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years of related business development or product development experience in industry, academic, governmental, or economic development setting.
  • Self-motivated to achieve unit and program goals and objectives.
  • Excellent communication capabilities, including strong presentation and written skills.
  • Proficiency in development and management of formal business engagements.
  • Strong Microsoft Office proficiency, particularly in Word and Excel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or sciences, preferably related to materials and material development.
  • At least 5 years of related business development or product development experience in industry, academic, governmental, or economic development setting.
  • Demonstrated success developing funded proposals.
  • Experience developing R&D project plans and managing contracts.
  • Working understanding of intellectual property protection and patent prosecution.
  • Experience with a customer management system (e.g., Salesforce).
  • Experience with New York State economic development programs.
