About the position

Barr Engineering Co. is seeking a business intelligence (BI) analyst to enhance our BI and data analysis capabilities. This position will play a crucial role in supporting our internal data warehouse and reporting requirements, as well as addressing the data needs of our external clients. The successful candidate will lead the advancement of our rapidly expanding data-related capabilities using the latest cloud-based tools. The BI analyst will be responsible for the design, development, and documentation of Barr's enterprise data warehouse, dashboarding, and self-service reporting ecosystem utilizing the Microsoft BI toolset, which includes SQL Server, SSIS, SSAS tabular, Power BI, and Azure. The role involves engaging cross-functional teams to elicit and document BI requirements clearly. The analyst will also design and develop database objects such as databases, tables, views, and stored procedures within a normalized and dimensional data warehouse environment. In addition, the BI analyst will develop, maintain, and support ETL processes using tools like SSIS and Azure Data Factory. They will create intuitive data visualizations using Power BI, Excel, and other reporting tools, and will be responsible for developing auditing and quality assurance practices to ensure the accuracy of the data warehouse and reporting. The analyst will perform data analysis to extract insights from complex datasets and communicate findings to business stakeholders through clear and concise presentations and reports. Furthermore, the role includes creating and maintaining system documentation, such as data dictionaries and procedures documents, and mentoring other data-focused staff to enhance their data capabilities and understanding.

Responsibilities

  • Continue the design, development, and documentation of Barr's enterprise data warehouse, dashboarding, and self-service reporting ecosystem using the Microsoft BI toolset (SQL Server, SSIS, SSAS tabular, Power BI, Azure)
  • Lead the process of engaging cross-functional teams to elicit and clearly document BI requirements
  • Design and develop database objects (databases, tables, views, stored procedures, etc.) within a normalized and dimensional data warehouse environment
  • Develop, maintain, and support ETL processes (e.g., SSIS, Azure Data Factory)
  • Create intuitive data visualizations using Power BI, Excel, and other reporting tools
  • Develop auditing and quality assurance practices to promote accuracy of the data warehouse and reporting
  • Perform data analysis to extract insights from complex datasets
  • Communicate findings and insights to business stakeholders through clear and concise presentations and reports
  • Create and maintain system documentation (e.g., data dictionaries, procedures documents)
  • Mentor other data-focused staff to advance their data capabilities and understanding

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, statistics, a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Three years of related work experience
  • Proficiency in developing database queries in SQL
  • Experience designing and developing ETL pipelines (e.g., SSIS, Azure Data Factory)
  • Experience designing and developing interactive data visualizations (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Plotly)
  • Experience leading requirements-gathering efforts for BI projects
  • Strong organizational skills, including ability to plan, monitor, and follow through on work commitments and confirm priorities with stakeholders
  • High level of commitment to deliver exceptional client service
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience developing data warehouse tools for business purposes
  • Experience designing and developing dimensional data models
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 and Azure technologies such as Fabric, Data Factory, Data Lake, Azure Analysis Services, and SharePoint Online
  • Familiarity with data science concepts and tools (e.g., machine learning, AI, Python/R)
  • Strong understanding of security in an integrated on-premises and cloud-based BI environment
