About the position

Northern Arizona University (NAU) is seeking a talented and motivated Senior Business Intelligence Analyst to join its Student Affairs Division. This position is integral to supporting the division's data collection and assessment efforts. The successful candidate will be adept at conducting both qualitative and quantitative analyses, translating complex findings into clear narratives that inform decision-making processes. The role involves collaboration with various stakeholders within the Student Affairs Division to identify data needs and leverage data to analyze systems and services that align with the division's mission and goals. The analyst will play a crucial role in fostering a culture of assessment within the organization, ultimately contributing to improved student persistence, academic and career purpose, wellness, and a sense of belonging among students. The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst will engage in a variety of tasks, including conducting thorough analyses of Student Affairs data to inform decision-making and support reporting requirements. This includes collaborating with colleagues to identify pertinent questions and service opportunities, providing insights and recommendations based on data analysis. The analyst will also conduct statistical analyses on survey and institutional datasets to identify trends, patterns, and correlations, utilizing advanced statistical techniques to derive actionable insights from large datasets. Presenting these findings in clear, concise reports or visualizations is essential for informing decision-making processes. In addition to analysis, the role involves defining reporting requirements in collaboration with Student Affairs colleagues, ensuring that reporting aligns with organizational objectives. The analyst will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of reporting data through validation and quality assurance processes. Identifying and monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) will be crucial for tracking progress toward goals and identifying areas for improvement. The analyst will also generate reports for key collaborators, providing recommendations for improvement based on their analyses. Data visualization is another critical component of this role. The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst will develop visually appealing and interactive data visualizations using tools such as Tableau and Power BI to effectively communicate trends and recommendations to Student Affairs audiences. Collaborating with colleagues to understand their data needs and translating them into effective visualization designs will be key to success in this position. Finally, the analyst will provide training and support to Student Affairs staff on report generation and the utilization of reporting tools. This includes offering guidance on data analysis techniques and best practices in reporting. Staying updated on industry trends and sharing best practices will be essential for continually improving processes and outcomes within the division.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and utilize moderately complex analytical tools and models to generate reports and insights.
  • Collaborate with Student Affairs colleagues to define reporting requirements and ensure alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of reporting data through data validation and quality assurance processes.
  • Identify, monitor, and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress toward goals and identify areas for improvement.

  • Continuously evaluate and enhance reporting processes to streamline efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Develop visually appealing and interactive data visualizations using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or other relevant software to communicate trends and recommendations effectively to Student Affairs audiences.
  • Conduct usability testing and gather feedback to improve data visualizations for enhanced user experience and comprehension iteratively.
  • Provide training and support to Student Affairs staff on report generation, interpretation, and utilization of reporting tools.
  • Provide guidance and support to the division on data analysis techniques, reporting best practices, and software tools.
  • Stay updated on and share industry trends and best practices in data analysis, reporting, and visualizations to continually improve processes and outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field such as Data Science, Statistics, Business Analytics, or a similar discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience in data analysis, business intelligence, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis and data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar software.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets and present findings clearly.
  • Experience with statistical programming languages such as R or Python is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and build relationships with stakeholders across the organization.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in higher education or student affairs data analysis is a plus.
  • Familiarity with SQL and database management systems.
  • Knowledge of data governance and data quality best practices.
  • Experience with project management methodologies.
