About the position

The Business Intelligence Analyst at Michigan Technological University plays a crucial role in data reporting and analysis within the Information Technology department. This position involves creating reports, dashboards, and data sets, as well as executing test plans and maintaining documentation. The analyst will contribute to a culture of respect, innovation, and open communication, supporting the university's mission to enhance teaching, learning, research, and public service through effective technology solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Create, design and execute dashboards/data visualizations and operational reporting using campus software reporting tools, including WebFOCUS and SQL Developer.
  • Plan, create and support self-service data tools.
  • Document reporting specifications.
  • Prepare and execute test plans.
  • Review and understand university processes/procedures and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Provide occasional support outside of regular business operating hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Maintain university data dictionary.
  • Prioritize work in line with institutional expectations.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.
  • Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business/data analytics, computer science, management information systems or a technically related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated professional experience using a query-based reporting tool to create reports and dashboards (e.g., WebFOCUS or Tableau).
  • Demonstrated professional experience and understanding of complex table joins and database query languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data, processes, and complex situations to determine a best course of action using problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities and objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with accuracy, precision, and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in an academic environment.
  • Experience using Oracle, Ellucian Banner, and/or Information Builders WebFOCUS.
  • Experience with data governance.
  • Experience working on projects in a project management environment.

Benefits

  • Negotiable salary starting at no less than $65,000.
  • Full-time equivalent (FTE) of 1.00, indicating a full-time position.
