About the position

We are hiring a Business Intelligence Analyst with MS Power BI development skills, a proven foundation of Data Science, and mid-level Machine Learning and ML Ops skills to design, develop and move BI, Analytics, and ML tools to production! Our efforts enhance and evolve business operations and scientific decision-making capability and related activities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This position resides in the Enterprise Applications & Business Intelligence group of the Application Development division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at ORNL. This position supports ORNL's Business analytics applications and data engineering activities which potentially cover all areas of corporate data (business, human capital management, facilities, operations, and research). ORNL's BI cubes, models, and analytics are heavily centered on Microsoft and SAP technologies, to include Visual Studio, SSIS packages, and Dimensional Modeling and SQL 2016-2022 and SQL Azure. In this role, you will develop and support corporate reports and dashboards with PowerBI and other Microsoft reporting tools. You will also work with data warehouse technologies beyond the worlds of Microsoft and SAP, applying SQL and ML experience to understand their potential use cases. A key responsibility will be to develop and implement a master data management strategy, ensuring data accuracy, cleanliness, transformation, and accessibility. You will collaborate with business and scientific/technical customers to understand their needs and capture detailed actionable requirements. Additionally, you will analyze emerging trends and technologies to provide recommendations for roadmaps and BI strategy, including Cubes, SSIS, Visual Studio, Azure Data Factory, SQL, SQL Azure, and ML techniques and solution methods. Collaboration with other DOE labs and private sector companies will be essential to understand capabilities. You will follow ORNL and ITSD software quality assurance standards, ITIL effective practices, and project management requirements. Providing personal training for end users on Business Intelligence tools and effective practices will also be part of your responsibilities. Responsibilities

Requirements

  • A BS in computer science, data science, business analytics management, applied statistical analytics or a related technical field of study and two (2) to four (4) years of aligned experience is required.
  • MS and PhD degree holders in the same fields of study are also encouraged to apply.
  • Prior Microsoft Business Intelligence development experience including requirements gathering, design, and deployment of reporting solutions.
  • Demonstrated strong emphasis in delighting customer and end-user needs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Excellent relational client-facing skills, effective exploratory analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to innovate as work demands.

  • Deeply curious approach toward novel development, planning, support, design, modification and testing of data warehouse cubes, models, dimensions, measures, views and reports.
  • Experience creating BI solutions using MS Power BI, SQL, and MS Azure tool sets.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL, Visual Studio or Visual Studio Code tools and APIs for analytic tool and visualization creation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Microsoft Power BI and data visualization to represent sophisticated data concepts that foster business transparency and support effective decision making.
  • Understanding of ETL (extract, transform, load) framework.
  • Understanding of multidimensional and tabular modeling.
  • Experience using SQL Server Database engine (SSMS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS).
  • Experience using Microsoft Visual Studio or Visual Studio Code, Python.
  • Experience with current Data Science or Data Analytic tools including low code-no code.
  • Knowledge of current ORNL business processes and applications (or similar).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint technologies.
