UW Facilities manages the University's buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services and Safety. We have an outstanding opportunity for a Business Intelligence Data Architect.
The Business Intelligence Data Architect is an important role in the Business Innovation and Technology (BIT) team for delivering on the UW Facilities strategy to make more data driven business decisions. This position is instrumental in working across UW Facilities organization for driving efforts to improve cross-unit data collection and analysis used to manage work, improve processes, and align with organizational strategy. The data, analysis, reporting, and data visualization produced by this position will play a critical role in understanding tactical issues, designing supportive data structures, managing technical resources, to establishing a robust reporting architecture to meet business demands.
Under the general direction of the Manager of Business Intelligence Analytics, this role will be responsible for designing, developing, creating, dashboarding, and maintaining critical business and operational reports. This position will work across UW Facilities, UW-IT, and University partners to gather and document requirements for developing data and reporting strategies to meet University needs and priorities. This role may also work with inter-collegiate, state, and federal entities to deliver the best possible data solutions for UW staff and partners. Job complexities include contributing to initiatives to develop and document and implement data standards, implement database security requirements, and develop business aligned reporting solutions.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Data architecture (40%)
* Devise and implement data structure and solutions that will impact, improve and inform both UW Facilities stakeholders as well as external teams across the University that use and work with facilities data.
* Operate as a subject matter expert for UW Facilities data architecture and design.
* Translate business requirements into databases, data warehouses, and data streams.
* Create and implement data management processes and procedures.
* Research and maintain documented understanding of the broad university data environment.
* Develop application programming for ETL interfaces to effectively move, update and verify data.
Data Reporting (30%)
* Recommend and design reporting solutions that inform UW Facilities' needs for long-term planning, goal setting and strategy. Solutions will include organizational Key Performance Indicators and operational performance metrics.
* Collaborate and partner with peers and business owners to define business requirements.
* Operate as a subject matter expert for UW Facilities data reporting.
* Use SQL, data visualization, and business intelligence tools to create reports.
* Maintain existing reports and troubleshoot them when needed.
* Work with departments to understand their needs and develop objectives and metrics.
* Create department-specific reports that help improve workflow and efficiency.
* Work with stakeholders to review, update and enhance existing reports.
Database administration (20%)
* Operate as a subject matter expert for UW Facilities database administration.
* Maintain data access requirements and ensure that organizational data is secure.
* Manage vendor, partner and contractor engagements from negotiation through delivery.
* Backup and restore data to prevent data loss.
* Monitor database operation and provide support.
* Build and maintain data repositories.

Requirements include:
* Bachelors degree in Data Science, Informatics, Information Technology, Computer Science or related field.
* 4 years' experience in Business Intelligence supporting a medium sized or larger complex enterprise data environment.
* Excellent technical skills including understanding of operational requirements for data base servers, data warehouses and data integration (including API's).
* Highly capable with MS SQL, MySQL, and supporting reporting platforms including SSRS, Tableau, and PowerBI.
* Excellent soft skills. Demonstrated ability to translate technical needs into business requirements, and work as a senior level member of a technology team.
* Knowledge of descriptive statistics including mean and median, standard deviation, percentiles, outliers, and distribution.
* Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
* Ability to deal with ambiguity and navigate with little written documentation and instructions
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
* Experience in higher education processes, applications, and systems at a complex, large, research university.
* Knowledge and understanding of common IT frameworks including the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), Information Technology Service Management (ITSM or ITIL).
* Experience with Java, JavaScript, and API usage.
* Experience with complex, distributed cloud-based infrastructure.
