About the position

As a Business Legal Research Analyst at DLA Piper, you will play a crucial role in providing research support to lawyers, paralegals, and all firm staff. Your primary responsibility will be to evaluate various research inquiries swiftly, determining the most effective methods and resources necessary to fulfill each request. This involves prioritizing requests, analyzing results, compiling answers, and communicating your findings in a clear and concise manner. Additionally, you will coordinate vendor resource training, scheduling, and communication to ensure that all staff are well-equipped to utilize the available resources effectively. In this position, you will conduct research and fact-checking across a wide range of topical areas, including legal, business/corporate, intellectual property, public records, and legislative history, among others. You will be expected to showcase strong research skills, demonstrating an ability to think critically about research tools and conduct cost-effective and efficient research. Regular use and learning of multiple research platforms such as Lexis+, Westlaw Edge, Bloomberg Law, and others will be essential to your success. You will also assist in training attorneys and staff on the effective use of these legal and business research resources, organizing internal training programs, including new hire orientations and vendor resource communication. Your role will also involve participating in the regular review and evaluation of new and existing electronic resources, aiming for improved service and research efficiencies. A commitment to continuing education is vital, as you will be expected to attend workshops and webinars for professional development and regularly review professional literature. You will align with specific practice groups to support their resource needs and may need to work outside of normal business hours and on weekends as required, participating in a rotating weekend on-call schedule approximately once a quarter. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research and/or fact-checking in a wide range of topical areas including legal, business/corporate, IP, public records, and legislative history.
  • Showcase strong research skills including an ability to think critically about research tools, conduct cost-effective and efficient research, compile research results, summarize data and communicate methodology and results clearly.
  • Regularly use and learn multiple research platforms, including Lexis+, Westlaw Edge, Bloomberg Law, VitalLaw, Capital IQ, FactSet, Pitchbook, Docket Navigator, PatBase, and others.
  • Knowledge of tools and techniques for setting up current awareness and litigation alerts.
  • Assists with the training of attorneys and staff on the effective use of legal and business research resources.
  • Organizes internal training program, including new hire orientations and vendor resources communication/scheduling.
  • Participates in the regular review and evaluation of new and existing electronic resources with an eye toward improved service and research efficiencies.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuing education by attending workshops and webinars for professional development and regular review of professional literature.
  • Aligns with specific practice groups to support their resource needs.
  • Willingness to work outside of normal business hours and on weekends as needed, participating in a rotating weekend on-call schedule.

Requirements

  • 4 Year / Bachelor's Degree in Library Science or related field.
  • 3 years' experience conducting research in a legal setting, preferably in a law firm environment.
  • Experience performing extensive research using tools such as Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg Law, and others is required.
  • Strong research skills required to conduct research on a variety of legal and business topics.
  • Highly service-oriented with strong interpersonal skills necessary to interact regularly with attorneys, clients, and staff.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently and rearrange priorities as workload dictates.
  • Ability to adapt and learn new tools and technology.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree
  • JD also preferred.
  • Experience with TRG's Quest request management system and Vable's current awareness platform are preferred.
