About the position

The Business Manager is responsible for overseeing the fiscal functions of the school district, ensuring compliance with accounting principles and internal controls. This role involves financial analysis, budgeting, cash management, and reporting, while also supervising business office personnel and serving on the Superintendent's Leadership Team.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the investment of all District funds to maximize income according to Board policies.
  • Perform financial analysis of program budgets, revenues, and expenditures.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements for the Board of Education.
  • Develop and prepare the District budgets, including presentation materials for the Board.
  • Oversee the District's accounting and payroll functions.
  • Review and implement Finance Department procedures for accurate accounting and strong internal controls.
  • Calculate debt levy and manage cash disbursement for District debt funds.
  • Manage the District's debt service, including analysis of millage and cash requirements.
  • Analyze short and long-term cash flow, recommend borrowing as necessary, and complete successful borrowing processes.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal reporting requirements.
  • Act as the key management contact with external auditors for annual financial reports.
  • Implement legal requirements and District policies related to finance and purchasing.
  • Ensure compliance with GASB 34 and related regulations.
  • Reconcile property taxes and analyze delinquent tax payments.
  • Supervise assigned staff within the district office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3 to 5 years of related job experience in accounting or financial leadership, preferably in a school environment.
  • Possess or be willing to obtain Michigan School Business Officials Business Manager or Chief Financial Officer Certification.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer applications relevant to job functions.
  • Clear criminal history check, physical, and drug test required; first aid training.
