About the position

The University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health is seeking a Business Operations Manager to oversee the financial and operational integrity of a well-established research division. This role is crucial for managing the administrative functions of the Center for Research on Aging and the Doctoral Program in Gerontology. They will conduct comprehensive budget and financial analyses, prepare and distribute timely financial reports, and manage large-scale budgets that are interrelated yet individually funded. The manager will also develop and monitor annual budgets, approve effort reports, and ensure that expenses are charged appropriately to grants. Additionally, they will be responsible for drafting budget justifications for grant applications and ensuring all necessary documents are prepared and submitted according to policy guidelines. Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance of projects and budgets with payroll, reimbursement, accounting, and personnel policies.
  • Conduct budget, financial, and fiscal analyses and make recommendations based on findings.
  • Prepare and distribute month-end, quarterly, and year-end financial reports, including budget vs. actual projections.
  • Manage large-scale, interrelated budgets and develop five-year working budgets with updated projections as needed.
  • Develop, monitor, analyze, and report annual budgets and payroll charges; approve effort reports for certification.
  • Ensure appropriate expense charging to grants and review accounts for corrective actions.
  • Analyze monthly P-card reconciliations for compliance and manage financial transactions such as requisitions and POs.
  • Develop and execute internal policies and recommend amendments to existing unit policies.
  • Prepare budgets and draft budget justifications in consultation with project coordinators and principal investigators.
  • Assemble necessary documents for grant applications and ensure submission requirements are met.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, finance, marketing, accounting, human resources, or a related field.
  • Five years of business-related experience, with at least two years in human resources and payroll, finance, facility operations, or research administration.
  • Two years of direct management experience involving personnel recruitment, training, and professional development.
