About the position

The Orleans County NRCD (OCNRCD) is seeking a part-time Business Operations Manager to support its mission of protecting and enhancing the waters of Orleans County through effective business management. Established in 1947, OCNRCD has evolved to conserve all natural resources, focusing on voluntary conservation efforts with local farmers and landowners. The Business Operations Manager will play a crucial role in assisting the Board of Supervisors and District Manager in delivering internal business management needs, thereby enabling staff to effectively implement soil and water conservation practices. This position is designed to strengthen the organization as it scales up its staffing capacity, ensuring that the OCNRCD can meet its strategic goals and continue to serve the community effectively. The ideal candidate will be an organized and positive professional with strong communication skills and experience in financial management and administration. This internally focused role will involve providing operational and administrative support to staff, leading financial operations, ensuring compliance with open meeting laws, and working on special projects that enhance the organization's efficiency and effectiveness. The candidate should have a passion for stewardship of natural resources and a connection to the local community, contributing to the diversity and excellence of the institution. In this role, the Business Operations Manager will conduct financial analysis, manage QuickBooks online practices, provide clerical human resources support, maintain organizational policies, oversee grant management software, and assist with special projects aimed at improving workflow systems and securing additional grant funds. The position requires a high level of detail orientation, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently while supporting a mission-driven team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide operational and administrative tasks and clerical office assistance to staff.
  • Lead financial operations.
  • Meet open meeting laws for board meetings.
  • Work on special projects.
  • Conduct financial analysis processes including updating and maintaining tracking spreadsheets.
  • Provide grant and services agreement budgeting support, tracking, and reporting.
  • Manage OCNRCD QuickBooks online practices and processes including processing invoices and expenses.
  • Provide clerical human resources support and maintain organizational policies and procedures.
  • Maintain OCNRCD insurance policy.
  • Manage and pay the organization's quarterly taxes.
  • Maintain supplies for the office in consultation with the District Manager.
  • Oversee the district equipment catalog and vehicle maintenance requirements.
  • Oversee and work with staff to maintain OCNRCD's grant management Trello software.
  • Attend monthly board meetings, take minutes, and complete needed tasks for OCNRCD.
  • Work alongside the District Manager on special projects like assessing workflow systems.
  • Secure additional grant funds to boost core programs and services.
  • Provide administrative day-to-day support to staff for delivery of District Programs.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, business management, or a related field is ideal but not required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a similar role.
  • Strong and consistent communication skills in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with team members and partners.
  • Expert knowledge of human resources, database management, financial management, bookkeeping, and accounting software.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and set workload priorities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the environmental conservation field.
  • Experience working with and/or knowledge of state and federal conservation programs.
  • Knowledge of Conservation Districts.
  • Experience with mission-driven grant-funded organizations.
