About the position

The Business Software Application Teacher at the State Farm Correctional Center is responsible for providing effective Career and Technical instruction in the field of business software applications. This role involves assisting students, including inmates, in completing the required competencies for their trade area. The teacher will demonstrate effective classroom and lab management, ensuring that the lab operates in compliance with all safety management aspects. Additionally, maintaining accurate and current student records is a critical part of the job. The position requires engaging students in one-on-one teaching and working collaboratively with students and inmate aides in a classroom and lab environment. The teacher must possess a solid understanding of adult education policies and procedures, as well as a working knowledge of basic adult education fields, adult literacy, and relevant computer software. Experience in maintaining classroom equipment and inventories is essential, along with demonstrated competency in the related field of current trade licensure. A successful candidate will have knowledge and a proven success rate in GED preparation and completion. The minimum educational requirement is a four-year degree in Business or Information Technology, or a high school diploma with equivalent experience. Additionally, candidates must be eligible for a Collegiate license from the Department of Education with an endorsement in the business/information technology area. For those without a four-year degree, an 'MS Office Specialist' Certification is required. Candidates must also be prepared to obtain a provisional license within the first year of employment if they do not currently hold a teaching/trade license from the Department of Education. The position may require knowledge of correctional education classroom management and the ability to supervise students and inmate aides effectively. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching adults or youth in a correctional or alternative education setting, as well as those familiar with the Virginia Department of Corrections' institutional policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Four-year degree in Business/Information Technology or equivalent experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree with a major or minor in a relevant educational field.
  • Five years' experience in the related trade/field.
  • Experience teaching adults and/or youth in a correctional or alternative education setting.
  • Knowledge of all phases of the trade area.
