About the position

The Cable Splicer Apprentice position is a training role designed to equip individuals with the skills necessary for the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of electric distribution systems. This apprenticeship includes a combination of classroom instruction, computer-based learning, and hands-on training, allowing apprentices to progress to a fully qualified journey level as they meet performance expectations. The role involves working with both overhead and underground systems, ensuring reliable electric service to customers.

Responsibilities

  • Construct and maintain underground network electric distribution systems according to safety standards.
  • Install, repair, and remove conductors, transformers, capacitors, and street lights.
  • Extend and rebuild the distribution system based on engineering drawings.
  • Perform troubleshooting and service restoration during emergencies.
  • Conduct substation switching for network and automatic throw-over systems.
  • Install and repair primary cable, risers, and switch cubicles.
  • Locate and repair underground faults on primary and secondary circuits.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and complete necessary documentation.
  • Inspect, maintain, and test tools and equipment used in the role.
  • Maintain positive relationships with customers and company staff.
  • Operate assigned vehicle and ensure it is in proper working order.
  • Attend safety meetings and training sessions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Class A CDL with DOT certification and no restrictions against driving a manual shift vehicle.
  • Ability to maintain permanent residence within a 45-minute driving time to assigned service center.
  • Successful completion of Lineman and switching schools administered by the company.

  • Basic understanding of electrical principles.
  • Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with construction equipment.
