About the position

The Cable Technician role at General Dynamics Information Technology involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications and network cabling infrastructure at the Pentagon and surrounding areas. The position requires a strong understanding of cabling standards and practices, as well as the ability to work with various types of cabling systems, including fiber optic and copper cabling. The technician will be responsible for ensuring the integrity and functionality of the cabling systems, documenting work, and collaborating with team members to meet service orders and repair activities.

Responsibilities

  • Install and document new and/or updated Inside Plant cable infrastructure including conduit, cable trays, copper, coax, and fiber.
  • Follow JSP and commercial best practice procedures for installation of cable racks and wiring.
  • Analyze, administer, and maintain telecommunications and network cabling infrastructure.
  • Perform tasks related to service orders and repair activities for Category 6 cabling and VOIP networks.
  • Dress, terminate, and test cables and components using hand and power tools.
  • Interpret service orders, circuit diagrams, and networking logic diagrams.
  • Test, locate, install, and repair cabling infrastructure associated with trouble calls.
  • Maintain network by troubleshooting and repairing outages and updating documentation.
  • Identify, track, and remove abandoned cable while maintaining safety standards.

Requirements

  • Active Secret clearance
  • Associates Degree in a related technical discipline or equivalent experience
  • 3-5 years of related telecommunications experience
  • Familiarity with BICSI rules, regulations, and standards
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word for data input and record maintenance
  • Ability to communicate effectively with personnel of various expertise levels
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Basic networking skills

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with fiber optic splicing and terminating
  • Knowledge of network cabling test equipment
  • Customer service experience
